Prenatal Care

Regular chiropractic care is an integral part of the prenatal and postpartum care during pregnancy. It helps keep mom feeling good and assists her in coping with the physical stresses of an ever changing body.

Neuromuscular and Biochemical Changes During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, most women experience a number of neuromuscular and biochemical problems which respond favorably to gentle, safe, noninvasive chiropractic care. These include:

release of the hormone relaxin causes muscle and ligament relaxation

allows joints to more easily misalign

  • increased weight gain
  • increased demand and fatigue on spinal and pelvic muscles
  • increased stress on spinal and pelvic ligaments
  • increase in lumbar and thoracic spinal curves which further increase the above
  • increased joint stress and thus occurrence of vertebral and sacroiliac joint misalignments
  • change in weight distribution
  • increased demand and fatigue on spinal and pelvic muscles
  • increased stress on spinal and pelvic ligaments
  • increase in lumbar and thoracic spinal curves which further increase the above
  • increased joint stress and thus occurrence of vertebral and sacroiliac joint misalignments

The above changes primarily affect the pelvic and spinal ligaments, muscles, joints and other supportive soft tissues. These changes cause sprain/strains of pelvic and spinal structures, as well as alteration of the normal spinal curvatures and spinal biomechanics. The result is an increased stress on the body leading to pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic & Prenatal Care

Consult your chiropractor early; it is a good idea to see him or her when pregnancy is indicated. Spinal adjustments help the body adapt to these increasing demands. Your chiropractor's advice and attention will help make the prenatal phase as healthy and fulfilling as nature intended.

A chiropractor is a specialist, trained to detect interference of nerve impulse transmission. He corrects such interference with spinal adjustments, which restore good health.

Best of all, regular chiropractic care may reduce the severity of labor pains, increase the possibility of an uncomplicated delivery, and ensure faster postnatal recovery.

Our approach includes hands on therapies and education, which help the woman adapt to the changes her body goes through during pregnancy. Structural changes and associated symptoms which may occur during pregnancy include: increased curve of the low back, changes in center of gravity, alteration of gait and "flattening" of feet, increased laxity in joints (especially pelvis and low back), mid-back pain related to increased breast size and postural changes, hip pain, pain when rising from a seated/lying position, and sciatica.

Through our hands-on approach, we work to restore balance to the women's ever-changing structures. Using a variety of low-force adjusting techniques, we help restore and maintain normal motion in the joints throughout the spine and pelvis. This removes any nerve irritation or interference that may be occurring as the mother's body adapts to her growing baby. We also use a combination of myofascial release, cranial-sacral therapy, soft tissue techniques, and stretches to further support and balance the involved ligaments and muscles.

Chiropractic care before and during pregnancy is an essential element of our pre-natal care choices. Obstetrical texts report that difficult labors are caused by pelvic imbalances and it's resulting effects on your uterus and the baby's position. Care at DeCrescenzo Chiropractic restores balance to your pelvic muscles and ligaments which leads to easier births with fewer interventions such as pitocin, forceps, vacuum extractions and cesarean sections. Chiropractic adjustments not only reduce physical aches and pains, they remove interference on your nervous system allowing your uterus to function at maximal potential, and your baby to get into an optimal position for birth. This supports safer, and more satisfying labor and deliveries.
