Types of Lower Back Pain

The most common causes of lower back pain include age-related changes such as stenosis (narrowing of bony passageways in the spine), arthritis (joint inflammation), and degenerative disc disease (wear and tear on the spinal discs). Our team also frequently sees:

  • Disc herniation or bulge (tear and rupture or protrusion of a disc, caused by chronic or acute damage)
  • Muscle spasms and strains
  • Spinal ligament sprains
  • Vertebral joint locks and misalignments
  • Lumbar radiculopathy (nerve root compression in the low back) or sciatica (specifically, compression of the sciatic nerve root)

You can probably guess that advancing age is one of the most common risk factors for low back pain. Additional risk factors including being overweight or obese, being sedentary, having a physically demanding job (e.g., one with frequent standing, bending, lifting, or twisting), and experiencing acute physical trauma (e.g., an auto accident or fall).

Symptoms to Expect With Lower Back Pain

People experience lower back pain in different ways. Their symptoms can wax and wane throughout the day and may progress over time. Common complaints include:

  • Back stiffness
  • Back pain (sore, dull, achy, throbbing, or sometimes sharp)
  • Leg pain, numbness, and weakness
