Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Many people go to work every day and are unaware of the possible risks their work duties require of them. The majority of workers sit and work at a computer all day while others might perform repetitive bending and lift from the waistline. Lack of motion or too much motion can both develop abnormal movement patterns and posture that leads to pain and injury.

Performing proper workplace ergonomics will prevent some of this pain and discomfort. If you do suffer neck or back pain from your work duties we can help you at Rainier Sports and Spinal Rehab. Our rehabilitation team has experience with treating neck or back pain, headaches, shoulder, or hip, and knee pain.

Lifting Technique

Working in an office doesn't mean that there will be no heavy lifting involved. If a delivery comes in and you are responsible for putting everything away, you will need to lift boxes. Whenever you lift something heavy, you should lift with your legs, not your back. Improper lifting can cause a back injury.

Desk Setup

When you set up your desk at work, it is best to keep the things that you use most often within reach. If you spend the day reaching for your phone, stapler, or other frequently used objects, the repetitive stress can cause a work injury. When everything is within reach, you won't need to be stretching to reach what you need, preventing muscle strain and other issues.

Posture

Proper posture is essential while you work. If you are at your desk slouching, the stress on your neck, back, and shoulders can cause chronic pain. It is best to sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor. Make sure that your computer screen is right in front of you, as adjusting your head to see the screen can cause neck pain and eyestrain.

Take Frequent Breaks

Standing up and moving around as often as you can give your lower back and neck muscles a break. Viewing a computer screen for long periods of time causes your head to migrate forward putting undue stress on your neck and shoulders muscles. Sitting for longer periods of time tightens up your lower back muscles and causes pain and decrease movement. Sitting for long periods of time eventually encourages bad posture and movement patterns that will lead to decrease movement and possible injury.
