How Cell Phones are causing Bone Spurs in Young Adults

You see it everywhere, people looking down at their phones engaged in another world. Unaware of poor posture and spinal biomechanics being displayed. Our cell phones dictate and consume much of our day, whether we are making a call or playing that addicting game. Recent research suggests that this display of chin down posture is creating bone spurs in the back of the skull where the tendon meets the skull. Researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia released their study last year. Their research was published in the Scientific Reports in 2018. They reviewed over 1200 x-rays from ages 18 to 86. The bone spur growth was present in 33% of the population.  These growths measured from 3-5 mm and can cause pain and headaches. These bone growths take a while to develop, which means long periods of cell phone use starting as a young child can be a strong determining factor. Be aware of taking breaks from cell phone use and the longer periods of looking down, which may prevent any of the bone spurs that can result.
